BETTER ENVIRONMENT AWARDS

The Better Environment Awards scheme was established in 1995 to create environmental awareness amongst school children in the UAE and to demonstrate Shell's commitment to the country and its environment. The Scheme is sponsored by Shell and the Federal Environmental Agency, and is supported by the Dubai Municipality and the Ministry of Education.

The winners of the Better Environment Awards prepare a joint Environmental Project supervised by one of their teachers. These projects are supported by research and visual aids like photo albums and videos.

ENVIRO-SPELLATHON

Enviro-Spellathon an Environmental awarenessfor primary school children, as launched yesterday during a ceremony at the Beach Rotana Hotel.

The event is being organised by the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA), in cooperation with the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS) and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) and sponsored by Shell Abu Dhabi.

This year's edition will involve 125,000 school children in four emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah ad Ras Al Khaimah.

The program involves students ages six to 12, giving them several themes, including waste, water and wildlife, desert, cities and seas. Every child receives a booklet containing environmental information, tailored according to his or her age.

This year the ERWDA developed two themes 'waste' and 'water'.

Students were given two weeks to study the contents at hom e and in school after which the coordinator teacher of each school tested them on what they had learnt. At the end, certificate or gifts will be awarded to them depending on their scores.
