GOOD NEWS - Shell Honours Mohamed Defrawi

Mohamed DefrawiShell staff and management team bid farewell to Mohamed Defrawi at a party held in Abu Dhabi in February on the occasion of his retirement after serving as Shell Abu Dhabi Managing Director for nine years.

With the growing importance of Shell’s presence in the Gulf region, Mohamed Defrawi’s career culminated in 1998 with his final posting with Shell Abu Dhabi as Country Chairman and Managing Director until his retirement early 2007.

"I am truly grateful to Shell for giving me this opportunity to serve in Abu Dhabi. It has been a wonderful experience. I have met many quality people and have made some very good friends in Shell and in the wider Abu Dhabi community", said Mohamed Defrawi in his speech to Shell staff and families.

Since 1977, Mohamed Defrawi carried out a variety of jobs in Shell, including research management and corporate planning, moving between Shell’s West Hollow Research Centre and Shell's head office in Houston. In 1986, he took the position of Petrochemical Manager for Shell in Venezuela, based in Caracas. Following that, he went back to Houston to spend nine years as Business Manager for Shell Chemicals in the U.S.A.

In 1998, he became the Country Chairman for Abu Dhabi and Managing Director of what was then Shell Gas Abu Dhabi. “Before we got here, we did not know a single soul in Abu Dhabi, but we very quickly felt very much at home. I think, without doubt, that this is the best place to live and work in,” he said. Mohamed Defrawi saw Shell Gas Abu Dhabi through a change of name to become Shell Abu Dhabi, reflecting the wider activities of Shell in the Emirate. Over the years, the Shell Abu Dhabi team, under his leadership, worked hard to grow and contribute to the development with ADNOC and its group of companies, as well as its involvement in the community. Like other companies of the Shell group, Shell Abu Dhabi team embraced the principles of sustainable development and made them an integral part of the company’s plans and activities, which led Shell Abu Dhabi to broaden its perspective to take account of social and environmental concerns.

"It is with distinct pleasure that I pass the baton to Nejib. He brings with him a wealth of experience gained in Abu Dhabi, the region, and elsewhere around the world. I wish him and the entire team in Abu Dhabi lots of luck and success in the future,"said Mohamed during his farewell party.

Mohamed Defrawi was also honoured at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where HE Mohamed Omar Abdulla, former Director General of the Chamber thanked him for his long service and cooperation between Shell and the Abu Dhabi Chamber.

Additionally, the ladies of the Outpost Committee held a special farewell party for Mona Defrawi, who was always a very active member of the Shell family.

Mohamed and Mona Defrawi moved to the United States to join their sons, Tarek, Sherif and Yousef, who are working and studying there.
