Shell promotes “Goal Zero”
NO harm to people, and NO incidents

As part of the Shell Group’s continuing efforts to improve safety standards amongst staff in Shell companies, joint ventures and contractor companies, Shell Abu Dhabi office lead the roll out of the “Goal Zero” theme in its formal and non-formal gatherings.

Shell’s role as a good corporate citizen in Abu Dhabi is emphasised through maintaining the highest safety standards, reducing risks in all locations to “zero” level, as well as protecting the personal safety of its staff, the contractors’ staff, as well as the general public.

Shell’s safety message was very clear in all events that took place in Shell Abu Dhabi. The Shell Safety Day, attended by all Shell staff and secondees, was an opendiscussion forum where the importance of respecting and abiding by the HSE golden rules of “comply, intervene & respect” was emphasised. During the meeting, Shell management recognized the performance of its employees who have already reached “Goal Zero” in their duties. Hyder Ali & Abbas Mohamed, Shell drivers, were awarded for their safe driving during their years of employement at Shell. While driving for 400,000 kilometers on the road during his 10 years of employment with Shell, Hyder has “zero” incidents on his record. Abbas, driving 200,000 kilometers on the road over the past six years, also has “zero” incidents on his record.

On the global level, the Shell EP Internal Communications team won the Golden World Award for its communications plan to launch Goal Zero. This internationally recognised award is an annual event held by the global Public Relations industry body. The EP team was praised for its plan, which stood apart from hundreds of other entries with its structured approach, scalability and creativity. Goal Zero was launched in June 2007 to step up the pace of change towards an accident-free workplace.


HCT discusses industrial safety

Dr. Simon ChynowethUnder the patronage of HE Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Education, the Higher Colleges of Technology hosted the fourth annual engineering excellence forum in April. The theme of this year’s forum was “Preventing Accidents & Fatal Industrial Hazards”. Shell’s keynote speech on “assessing the hazards of industrial fumes and poisonous gases”, was delivered by Dr. Simon Chynoweth, Senior Consultant, Shell Global Solutions.

Dr. Chynoweth has over twenty years experience in the development and application of physical effects models, and has published over thirty papers in the scientific and engineering literature. The forum is a good network for local, regional and international safety and industrial hazards experts, executives from major oil, gas and industry sectors, as well as engineers and engineering educators and students.
